Injection Fall-Off Tests

As with a producing well, injection wells may also build "skin" over their operating life.

This skin may result from the accumulation of foreign matter screened or filtered from the injected fluid. The magnitude of the skin and the permeability of the reservoir in the area around the wellbore is determined from the injection fall-off test. This test is similar to the build-up test in that the change in wellhead pressure is monitored after flow is interrupted. The SPIDR is connected to the well as shown on the left.

If it can be determined early in the life of an injection well that there is an appreciable "skin effect" , remedial measures may be started before a full-scale pattern flood begins. Similarly, if tests show that a gradual buildup of skin is occuring with time, it is possible to take measures to free the water of plugging material.
